Letters from Australia

Letters written in 1931
There are no letters in the folder for the early months of 1931, presumably partly because Bertie was away for 2 periods in January and February on the Gold Prospecting trips with friends. (see next page for his diary accounts)
We therefore don't know what led up to the decision of his Father to send the money for 2 fares from Sydney to England on 3 March....

SS Balranald

Meta with her mother-in-law, Polly
in the garden at Elfordleigh, Horsell, Woking
On 4 March the berths on the ship are about to be booked on SS Balranald, to sail on 21 March, the day after their wedding. All is excitement!
18 March is 2 days before the wedding. Lots of packing and planning. Meta's wedding ring is to contain grains of gold found on the gold prospecting trips.
A formal wedding invitation for 20 March "sent" to Gladys and her husband Bill Smith.
Written in Fremantle on 5 April, but not posted until 29 April in Malta, an account of the wedding and the first part of the sea voyage when Meta was very sea sick. Calls at Hobart and Melbourne.
Dated 24-25 April, written in the Red Sea, posted in Suez, with plans for arriving in Tilbury and travelling to Woking.
And finally, the invitation from ARJ and Polly Broderick to celebratee the marriage at Elfordleigh, Horsell Park, Woking.
